Nothing says "Happy Holiday's" quite like an Italian home cooked meal from my Mom with many friends, good memories, and laughter. This year we were treated to a particularly good meal, and although we usually focus on restaurants I felt the need to really recognize the sheer deliciousness of this meal. While we had many many dishes served, I've chosen to focus on a few of my favorites. If you enjoy reading about food as much as I do and want a few good recipe ideas, read on!

Roasted Sausages, Peppers, Potatoes, and Onions

Spicy sausage is one of my favorite parts of my Mom's cooking. It's one of the best comfort foods with a little kick. This made a nice addition to the table with the colorful peppers. The sausage was spicy with sweet aftertaste, and contrasted nicely with the bite from the bell peppers and onions on the plate.

Chicken Piccata with Capers

However, my all-time favorite Italian dish is piccata...any kind of piccata. I love the capers, they really bring out the butter and lemon used in the dish. (Actually capers are delicious in almost anything, try them next time you scramble eggs in the morning.) Although the cookbook we use typically calls for veal, in this recipe my mom used chicken instead and it was a welcome replacement. Using a little of the piccata sauce on some spaghetti with the chicken is also a must.

Gingerbread Cake with Maple-Mascarpone Whipped Cream

As everyone knows, all holiday meals must end with a sweet touch. This was honestly one of the best tasting cakes I have ever had. I am not a huge cake person, I usually think most cakes taste dry or have the same sickeningly sweet icing you find at your local grocery store bakery. However, this cake was absolutely delicious. Its very soft and moist, stemming from the Guinness and molasses base. I highly recommend if you have a bit of time you try to make this cake, it was scrumptious.

All the savory recipes we covered came from "The Sopranos Family Cookbook as Compiled by Artie Bucco" written by Allen Rucker and recipes by Michele Scicolone. The Gingerbread Cake recipe can be found by following the link below! Happy cooking!
